Wallpaper Calculator
Calculate wallpaper rolls needed for any room, accounting for pattern repeat, doors, windows, and waste.
How to Calculate Wallpaper
Wallpaper adds texture, pattern, and personality to any room. Getting the right quantity is important because dye lots vary — if you run short, a second order may not match. The calculation depends on wall area, pattern repeat, and roll coverage.
The Wallpaper Formula
Wall Area = Room Perimeter × Ceiling Height
Net Area = Wall Area − Doors (21 sq ft) − Windows (12 sq ft)
Usable Coverage = Roll Coverage − Pattern Waste
Rolls = Net Area ÷ Usable Coverage (round up)
Understanding Pattern Repeat
Pattern repeat significantly affects how much wallpaper you need:
- No repeat / random match: Minimal waste (5%). Textures and solids.
- Straight match: Pattern aligns at the same point on each strip. Moderate waste (10–15%).
- Drop match (half-drop): Pattern offsets by half the repeat on alternating strips. Higher waste (15–25%).
- Large repeat (24"+): Can waste up to 25–30% per strip for alignment.
Wallpaper Types
- Vinyl-coated paper: Most common, durable, washable. Good for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Non-woven: Breathable, easy to hang (paste-the-wall method), easy to remove. Best for DIY.
- Pre-pasted: Adhesive pre-applied, just wet and hang. Convenient but adhesion may be weaker.
- Grasscloth: Natural fibers woven onto backing. Luxurious texture, high-end look. Requires professional installation.
- Peel and stick: Removable, no paste needed. Great for rentals and accent walls. Less durable long-term.
Hanging Tips
- Start at the least visible corner (behind a door or in a corner that's hidden)
- Use a plumb line or laser level for the first strip — walls are rarely perfectly vertical
- Overlap and double-cut seams for a seamless look
- Use a wallpaper smoother to remove air bubbles working from center to edges
- Apply primer/sizing to the wall first for better adhesion and easier future removal
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rolls do I need?
Measure total wall area, subtract openings, divide by usable coverage per roll (25–28 sq ft for a standard single roll after waste). Always round up and buy an extra roll for the same dye lot for repairs.
How does pattern repeat affect quantity?
Larger repeats increase waste. A 24" repeat can waste 15–25% more material than a random-match pattern. Factor pattern repeat into your calculation or use our calculator above.
How much does wallpaper cost?
Budget: $20–$40/roll. Mid-range: $40–$80/roll. Designer: $80–$200+/roll. Installation labor adds $25–$75 per roll.
Can I wallpaper over existing wallpaper?
Not recommended. Remove old wallpaper, repair the wall, and prime before hanging new paper for the best adhesion and appearance.
Single vs double rolls?
Most wallpaper is priced per single roll (~35 sq ft) but sold in double rolls (~70 sq ft). Check the label for actual roll dimensions before ordering.
