Mulch Calculator

Calculate how much mulch you need in cubic yards or bags. Estimate cost for garden beds, landscaping, and tree rings by area and depth.

How to Calculate Mulch

Mulch is essential for weed suppression, moisture retention, temperature regulation, and soil health. Getting the right amount prevents bare spots (too little) or root suffocation (too much). The calculation is straightforward: area × depth converted to cubic yards.

The Mulch Formula

Cubic Yards = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324
Bags (2 cu ft) = Cubic Yards × 13.5
Coverage per cubic yard: 324 sq ft at 1", 162 sq ft at 2", 108 sq ft at 3"

Mulch Types and Best Uses

  • Hardwood mulch: $25–$40/cu yd. Decomposes in 1–2 years, enriching soil. Most popular all-purpose mulch.
  • Cedar/Cypress: $35–$65/cu yd. Natural insect deterrent, lasts 2–3 years. Pleasant aroma.
  • Pine bark: $30–$45/cu yd. Slightly acidifies soil. Ideal for acid-loving plants.
  • Colored mulch: $30–$60/cu yd. Black, red, or brown dyed. Lasts longer cosmetically but dye can leach.
  • Pine straw: $5–$8/bale. Popular in Southeast US. Acidifies soil, stays in place on slopes.
  • Rubber mulch: $80–$150/cu yd. Lasts 10+ years. Best for playgrounds. Doesn't enrich soil.

Mulching Best Practices

  • Apply 2–3 inches deep for optimal weed suppression and moisture retention
  • Keep mulch 3–4 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks ("volcano mulching" damages trees)
  • Refresh mulch annually — add 1–2 inches to maintain proper depth
  • Install landscape fabric under mulch for maximum weed control in ornamental beds
  • Apply in spring after soil warms to retain moisture through summer

Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply area × depth ÷ 324 for cubic yards. A 200 sq ft bed at 3" deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards. Round up when ordering bulk delivery.

How deep should mulch be?

2–3 inches for most landscaping. Under 2" won't suppress weeds effectively. Over 4" can suffocate roots and trap excess moisture.

How much does mulch cost?

Bulk: $25–$65/cu yd depending on type. Bagged: $3–$6 per 2 cu ft bag. Bulk is 30–50% cheaper per cubic yard. Delivery adds $50–$100.

How many bags per cubic yard?

13.5 standard 2-cu-ft bags per cubic yard. For large projects, bulk delivery saves money and effort.

What type is best?

Hardwood for general use, cedar for insect resistance, pine bark for acid-loving plants. Avoid dyed mulch near vegetable gardens and water features.
