Topsoil Calculator
Calculate topsoil needed in cubic yards and bags for lawn prep, garden beds, raised beds, and grading projects.
How to Calculate Topsoil
Topsoil is the foundation of healthy lawns and gardens. Whether you're establishing a new lawn, filling raised beds, or improving existing garden soil, accurate volume calculation prevents expensive over-ordering and ensures you have enough to finish the job.
The Topsoil Formula
Cubic Yards = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324
Bags (40 lb) = Cubic Yards × 36 (approximately)
Coverage per cubic yard: 324 sq ft at 1", 108 sq ft at 3", 81 sq ft at 4"
Topsoil Depth Guide
- New lawn (from scratch): 4–6 inches. Deeper is better for root development.
- Over-seeding / lawn repair: 1–2 inches to fill low spots and cover seed.
- Garden beds: 8–12 inches for vegetables, 6–8 for flowers.
- Raised beds: Fill depth minus 2 inches (soil settles 10–15%).
- Grading and leveling: Varies — calculate the fill volume needed.
Types of Topsoil
- Unscreened topsoil: $15–$30/cu yd. May contain rocks, roots, and clumps. Good for fill and grading.
- Screened topsoil: $30–$50/cu yd. Filtered through screen to remove debris. Best for lawns.
- Garden mix/blend: $40–$80/cu yd. Topsoil + compost + amendments. Best for garden beds.
- Bagged topsoil: $3–$6 per 40-lb bag. Convenient for small areas but expensive per volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much topsoil do I need?
Area × depth ÷ 324 = cubic yards. For 1,000 sq ft at 4" deep: about 12.3 cubic yards.
How much does topsoil cost?
Bulk: $20–$60/cu yd plus $50–$150 delivery. Bagged: $3–$6 per bag but much more expensive per volume.
How deep for a new lawn?
Minimum 4 inches, ideally 6. Deeper topsoil produces healthier, more drought-resistant lawns.
How much does a cubic yard weigh?
2,000–2,400 lbs (1–1.2 tons). A pickup truck safely carries 1–1.5 cubic yards.
Topsoil vs garden soil?
Topsoil is natural screened earth. Garden soil is topsoil + compost and amendments. Use topsoil for lawns and grading, garden soil for planting beds.
